The Golden Age of India was during the Gupta Empire. Law and order was restored and people began to prosper again. The Gupta Empire ended when Muslim Turks invaded and the Golden Age ended.

During this time India was united into a central government. It settled along the Ganges River. The great rulers were Chandragupta and Asoka.

The Upanishads was a sacred, Hindu text, writen about 400 BC. The basic ideas were that Brahman was the great spirit and that the Atman is part of Brahman. They believed in Reincarnation, nothing living truly dies. Also, a perfect understanding must be made with Brahman.

During this time Muslims started to invade and brought their religion with them. They believed different from the Caste System which made people unhappy. The greatest Mongul was Akbar who created a strong central government.

The Caste system was the social structure or pyramid in India. People were not treated equal and were treated according to their social class. Although the Caste System was outlawed in 1950, people still follow it today.

Civilization began over 4,000 years ago along the Indus river. The two main cities were Mohenjo-Daro and Harappa. Archeologists have studied and still are studying artifacts that we can use to determine the past.
