Early life
Many of Abigail's relatives were ship captains and merchants. Her father had an expansive library that she took advantage of to learn many new things. -
Married John Adams
Abigal married John Adams when he was struggling as a lawyer. He was nine years older than her. John admired Abigail's way of thinking and speaking. -
John Adams early political years
Abigail raised her children while she also ran the family farm, while John begain building his political background. John mainly lived in Boston, Massachusetts. Abigail remained at home to run the farm and to take care of her children. She got to do lots of things that women normally did not do, such as making important decisions and trading goods at the farm. -
First Continental Congress
John got chosen as a delegate to the First Continental Congeress. This made him not at home often. He traveled alot more. Since John was not at home alot Abigail wrote letters to her husband helping him with decisions, and her fears and loneliness. -
Affects on her family
Abigails family in Braintree suffered from a fatal infection. Abigail took care of her sick family. She lost six people one was her mother. -
Letters
Abigail wrote many letters describing what happened durring the events leading to and durring the Revolutionary War. She wanted her husband to take womens rights into consideration if the declaration got passed. She wrote in one of her letters , "In the new code of laws which i suppose it would be nessary for you to make, I desire you would remember the ladies and be more generous and favorable to them than your ansectors." -
Revolutinary War Years
John was called to come to the Second Contenintal Congress and later Europe. Abigail continued to write John letters. During this war Abigail would provide meals and shelter to Continental soilders who stopped by. -
The Move To England
Abigail and her daughter joined her husband and sons in England. She hosted many parties for political and social leaders. After five years they all returned home. -
Vice Presidency Years
The Revolutinary War ended. The United States needed a president, John Adams came second and became Vice President. Abigail supported him and the family moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Once again Abigal became a hostess. -
First Lady
John ran for president and won. She was a trusted "ear" for the president and helped him with many political problems. She continued to write letters and take care of the family farm through letters to her sister. At one time she became sick then recovered to resume her first lady duties. -
Life After Retirerment
After Johns Retierment many of her family members became sick. Abigail took care of her family that were sick. Some died such as her sister and her sisters husband. -
Illness and Death
Abigal Adams suffered a stroke and died on October 28th 1818. She was well known because she was the first woman to be the wife of a president and the mother of a president, John Quincy Adams. She was also known fo sticking up for womens rights and not backing down.
