Manhattan Project
Video describing the Atomic BombThe Manhattan project was a project to create the famous atomic bomb. Albert Einstein sent a letter to Dr. Roosevelt explaining the project and became a great success after that. It is important to history because it was created near the time of WW2. It was active through 1942-1946. This invention had changed history for the better because it gave the US a brand new weapon to work with while they defeated the Germans. This saved the lives of many Jews as well. -
Partition of India and Pakistan (Family)
This is the day when one country wa divided into two. This is also the day when Pakistan was established as it's own country. I was born in Pakistan and grew up there for 3 years until I moved to Canada. This event is very important to me and to history. The countries split due to conflict as well as religious beliefs. Pakistan is a Islamic based country and my family is Muslim so we are from Pakistan. However, there are still some Muslims living in India as well as Hindus living in Pakistan. -
Founding father of Pakistan, Quaid-e-Azam passed away (Family)
Muhammad Ali Jinnah (Quaid-e-Azam) was a lawyer, politcian, and the founder of Pakistan. He died at the age of 71. This is important to my family because my family and many other Pakistani's were depressed at this time. His birthday is also a National holiday in the rememberance of him. There is also a supermsrket named after him, and my grandparents live right near the supermarket. Whenever I go on vacation to visit, I make sure to go to that market. -
Newfoundland joins Canada
Shortly after ww2, a vote took place which ended up making Newfoundland a province in Canada. It was previously called the indpendent Dominion of Newfoundland before it joined Canada. The votes were 52% to 48% causing Canada to win Newfoundland. This is important to Canadian history because this event gave Canada another province, Canada had made the choice of taking NFL in as part of their country. This concluded the making of Canada as a country with a total of 10 provinces and 3 territories. -
NATO was formed
NATO stands for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. It was formed for collective security of many of the countries involved. It consisted of tons of countries including Canada. It is important to Canadian history because Canada was involved. The Warsaw Pact was created as a response of defence from the Soviet Union. Due to NATO, Canada stayed protected throughout 1945-1982. -
The Cuban Crises
The criss was between the Soviet Union and Cuba on one side and the United States on the other side. Cuba and Russia were in a communist alliance type deal and the soviets had missiles in cuba, which could rain destruction on the US from that close.
This is important to history because the US was worried about that and had to take certain measures to secure their independence. The measures that took place created tension betweem Cuba and the US. These tensions still last today. -
John F. Kennedy Died
The 35th president of the United States of America got assassinated. He was shot to death while travelling in an open car in Dallas Texas. There are many theories as to why he was shot, yet none of them have been confirmed. This is an important event that took place in history because a president of the USA got killed. This relates back to the case with Abraham Lincoln as well because he also got shot in a car along with many other similiarties. They both got shot in the head on a Friday. -
NASA - First Person On The Moon
NASA successfully took a leap for mankind by sending a man to place foot on the moon. Neil Armstrong was chosen for completing this mssion and changing history forever. This is an important event in history because for the first time ever, a human bean has completely a mission to the moon. NASA managed to send a man to the moon before the end of the deacde which was their goal. This event was also called Apollo 11. -
Bangladesh Liberation War (Family)
This war broke out when the Pakistani Army launched a military operation called Operation Searchlight. India latered joined the war and joined alliances with Bangladesh. Bangladesh won it's independence and seperated from Pakistan. This is a very important event to my family and to history. This event made Pakistan a seperate nation from Bangladesh. Also, I had family in Bangladesh at the time which actually made a desicion to move to Pakistan because we had more family there than in Bangladesh. -
Earthquake in Pakistan (Family)
This was a major earthquake that took place in Pakistan. About 5,300 people died and 17,000 got injured. This is very important to my family because my family because both my parents were living in Pakistan at the time. It didn't affect the city lived in directly but it did cause destruction throughout the cities around it. Pakistan has had many earthquakes but this one was quite major and there were many casualties. -
Vietnam War Ends
The war that took place in Vietnam about 14 years after WW2 ended. The US was involved and it was due to the attempt of ending communism. This is an important event in history because it was a failure attempt made my the US to end communism and it caused many casualties for no reason. Many Americans have marked this day as "benchmark for what not to do in all future U.S. foreign conflicts" (J. Rosenberg). -
The CN Tower becomes the world's tallest free-standing structure.
The CN Tower was made in Toronto. It is definetly a sight to see and is a tourist attraction. It was completed in 1976, and for 34 years it was the tallest free-standing building in the world. This is important to Canadian history because for this time, the tallest building in the world was in Canada, more specifically, Toronto. Up until 2009-2010 when the Burj Khalifa and Canton Tower were made, Canada held that record. -
Bill 101
Video about Bill 101 This bill was passed which made French the official language of Quebec. This law has been changed several times before, but now it is what it is. Rene Levesque was the governement of Premier who helped pass this law. It is important to Canadian History because Quebec is the only province which made French their official langauge. This bill solved a major problem for Quebec while they were trying to decide what the official language of the province will be. -
The Official Language Act of 1974 (Family)
This is act is basically Bill 22. It made French the official languge of Quebec. May 19th, 1980 was the day when my aunt landed in Toronto Ontario. She decided to come to Canada for education for her children. She chose Ontario because her children learned English before they came to Canada but they didn't learn French. My family later came to Canada for the same reason. -
The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms
This was the day when the Charter of Rights and Freedom took place in Canada. This was a a bill of rights that was made during the Constitution Act. It is important in Canadian history because due to this Charter, many laws were created which gave Canadians a lot of rights. Due to these laws, many Canadians have way more freedom they have now then they had a while ago.
