Juan de Onate
De Onate claimed what is now New Mexico as New Spain and established the town of Santa Fe. He was a harsh ruler. When the local natives refused to provide supplies for the soldiers a fight broke out. In retaliation De Onate's soldiers killed 800 natives, enslaved the women and children, and amputated the left foot of men over the age of 25. -
French fur trade
In 1605 Samuel de Champlain first founded Port Royal, and later founded Quebec. These settlements were established as centers to trade with Native Americans for furs. The fur trade eventually extended from the Great lakes region, south along the Mississippi River, creating the French Crescent. -

The Kansas-Nebraska Act negates the Missouri Compromise line and establishes popular soveriegnty in the territorries. Stephen Douglas introduced the bill to Congress; his hope was to build a transcontinetal railroad through the Nebraska territory which would connect with Chicago, increasing his chances for the presidency.One effect of the act was Bleeding Kansas. -
